Back to School: College Edition Part 1

By Imani Johnson - August 14, 2017

Some of us have already started school whether that be college or high school and  rest of us are counting down the days until the new school year starts.

I'm going to be doing a little back to school series posting four outfits on four days to show you guys what I'm going to be rocking on my college campus.

I want to say this, there is no dress code in college. So, some of the outfits if you are in high school you would not be able to wear (if you want me to do a high school friendly version leave a comment).

With these four back to school posts on each day I'm also going to express an expectation I have for myself for this new year.

The first expectation I am setting for myself will be to get more involved with clubs and organizations so, that I can associate with people who don't look like me. I tend to associate with people who generally have the same views and interests as me which makes my circle of influence small. I absorbed something, not really sure whether it was a book or a social media post or a podcast, but the person said something along the lines of how can you be truly creative when you are around the same things and people all the time.
So, I plan on taking this advice and putting it in to action to meet new people who will hopefully introduce me to new things and give me inspiration to create something amazing.
For this outfit the main focus was the skirt. I first discovered the UK brand Oh Hey Girl actually through an Instagram ad and I was looking through their website and really loved some of their clothing options and decided to purchase this skirt. I loved the way it appeared to flow as the model twirled in the picture and I did not have anything that looked like this in my closet.

When I do shop online I look for statement pieces, pieces that are unique that nobody would have even thought to buy. When you are buying statement pieces it is okay to splurge! You are paying for a unique well crafted item that you hope to have in your closet for years to come.
I prefer pairing statement pieces with basics like this off the shoulder black bodysuit as to not look like I'm doing too much. Although, this is quite a lot to just be going to class in, being a fashion major it is expected of you. As for my basic pieces in my closet I usually buy cheap. Basics match with anything which means they'll be worn a lot. For my basics I usually look to Forever 21 or Walmart.
To me there is no reason to buy a $40 plain white T-Shirt when Gildan has perfectly good ones for the low.
I finished the outfit off with some strappy black sandals. I call them my ninja shoes because for some reason I feel like a ninja when I'm wearing them. Before this summer I only owned one pair of sandals. I decided to actually invest in some so, I wouldn't have to wear sneakers all summer and let my feet breathe.

I avoided buying sandals 1.) because my feet are long and 2.) because I honestly cannot walk in sandals efficiently without tripping but I've gotten a little bit better.

The Outfit:
Shirt: Similar
Sandals: Asos
