The next thing I made during the summer is this light blue bandana print top.
I was walking in the ville right outside of Osan's front gate and of course all my people from Korea know that there are kiosks of people selling sunglasses, hats, bags, etc. One lady was selling these pretty large bandanas and I bought them not really knowing exactly what I was going to make out of it.
I knew that I wanted to make something with ruffles so I came up with this design.
Throughout these Summer Sewing posts you will notice that I never really start out with a set plan. I play with the fabric, observe it's drape and see how it wants to move, think of ways I can manipulate it and then I just kind of do it.
I don't make a sketch or anything I just work with the fabric.
From that idea I then proceed to make my own garment pattern base off of my measurements and then make my idea come to life.
The main reason I do not sketch is because I am not the best drawer. Instead of easily going to a blank piece of paper and letting ideas flow, I end up editing and critiquing my drawing before I even finish what I envisioned.
Drawing just gives me anxiety since I know that I'm not good at it.
So, I basically skip that step of the design process and go straight from inspiration to working on the final product.
I know that this is not the best habit, especially if I eventually want to be a serious designer but, it has been working for me so far.
