POP!

By Imani Johnson - January 10, 2018

A while ago I was approached to model for a photoshoot, now the photos are finally here and edited and I am excited to share them with you all!

I decided to interview Ashlynn Thompson, a creative and ambitious individual, who was also one of the creative directors for the shoot, check it out below!

What year are you?
I am in my sophomore year.

What is your major?
My major is Fashion Merchandising.

Why did you choose to pursue a major in fashion?
From an early age I’ve known I was meant to be in fashion. I believe fashion is an art form and
it’s the perfect way for me to express myself.

What do you plan on doing after school?
The plan is to become an editorial stylist and eventually a fashion director. I love creating
concepts for shoots and telling a story through the photos and clothing. At first glance I want my
viewers to know that every detail in my photos has a purpose, from the clothing and accessory
choices to the set design. My goal is for my audience to be able to interpret the meaning of my
shoot and for it to leave a lasting impression.

What was your role in the photoshoot?
I wore several hats for this shoot. I styled all of the looks, directed the shoot, served as one of the
creative directors and created the vision for the editing of the photos. It was so fulfilling to see
my concept come to life with the finalized photos.

What was your inspiration for the shoot?
Pop Art is the major inspiration for this shoot. Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol are the artists
who defined this movement and the editing and clothing were inspired by these two. Primary
colors and cartoon images are prevalent in Lichtenstein’s work, which can be seen in the
individual photos of Imani in the VAROOM denim shirt and POP! purse. Warhol translated
society’s desire for glamour and fame to his images, which I expressed in the photos of Imani
and Emma in the colorful faux furs.

What attracted you to this inspiration?
Color is a very important aspect of my shoots. Lichtenstein’s and Warhol’s use of color really
attracted me to the Pop Art inspiration. My favorite examples are Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe
series and Lichtenstein’s Varoom.
