How to Find Your Personal Style

By Imani Johnson - May 03, 2016

My personal style is kind of ...everywhere

Almost every piece of clothing I own is not like the other.
Each day I get dressed my outfit for that day can be completely different from what I wore the day before.
For example on Monday I may feel like dressing like a Grecian goddess, the next day I may be dressed kind of 90's grunge and the day after that I could be dressed like an urban street dancer.
All though, none of these styles correlate to one another, that is my personal style.
Nobody truly knows what I'm going to wear tomorrow, and now that has kind of been my goal in life and on my blog, to keep people guessing. (This also makes it hard for people to shop for me since they never know what I will and won't like)

But, in order for you to find your personal style you have to try different things, and see what you like and don't like. I just happen to have a taste for almost anything, but not everyone is like that.
I have a friend who mostly sticks with hippie, music festival, earthy type clothes and I have a friend who sticks her sporty style and wears sneakers most of the time. That is their personal style.

Discovering your personal style takes trial and error and can become a frustrating process but, if you keep trying you will be able to find it.

Here are a couple of tips to get you started!

  • Find your style inspiration: Doing so will help you figure out what you do an don't like. You can do this by finding inspiration on Pinterest, Tumblr, Instagram etc.
  • Let your friends shop for you: Your friends probably know you better than you know yourself and they can help you pick out clothes for you that you may have never even thought of wearing before.
  • Find a brand you love:  Brands such as Alexander Wang, Chanel, and Marc Jacobs have very unique styles and cater to a specific group of people. Finding one you love can help you see what style you are going for.
  • Follow every trend:  Following every trend will pretty quickly help you determine what you do and don't like, because some trends are not for everybody.
  • Clean out your closet:  Take a good look at every piece of clothing you own, you see that sweater you haven't worn in 2 years yeah, get rid of that. Cleaning out your closet helps you see which style of clothes you don't like since you never wear them.
  • Highlight your favorite aspect:  If you really love your collar bone why are you buying that turtle neck!?
  • Be yourself:  You know yourself pretty well, have confidence in your choices and you will be able to rock anything!
